NEWSLETTER JUNE 2005
NEXT MEETING: Our last meeting before the summer recess is scheduled for 30th June at 6:00pm. Dr. John Burton of DePaul University, Chicago, will speak on "Monument in Search of Meaning: Bahamian Images of Christopher Columbus." The lecture will be accompanied by a slide presentation. Please plan to attend what promises to be another interesting meeting.
HISTORY AWARD: In the May Newsletter we announced that The Bahamas Historical Society would offer to sponsor the history award at the College of The Bahamas. The award has been named in honour of the late Dr. Paul Albury, former President of The Bahamas Historical Society, historian and author. We are pleased to advise that the first recipient of the Paul Albury Memorial Award for Associates of Arts in History is Mr. Garth Philippe who graduated with a GPA of 3.69 in his major.
MUSEUM: The Museum will be closed for the summer during July and August. We thank the volunteers for their invaluable services in keeping the Museum open during the past year.
INVENTORY: This summer we plan to complete the inventory of the Museum. Ms. Virginia Ballance will again spearhead the operation. This summer the artifacts and books in the old kitchen will be inventoried. Once again we invite members to volunteer to help Ms. Ballance.
MEMBERSHIP DUES: Notice of membership dues was mailed with the May Newsletter. Please complete the form and return it, with payment, to the Treasurer at the address in the letterhead. Members who receive the Newsletter by e-mail should print the form and return it, with payment, to the Treasurer. This notice does not apply to Life Members.
NEW WEBSITE: Please have a look at our new and improved website at www.bahamashistoricalsociety.com. Parts of it are still being developed but it is a big improvement over the previous site. A special thanks goes to Mr. Stephen Aranha for developing the new website for us. We will be positing the Newsletter and any news that develops after the Newsletter is mailed. This will be a good way to keep up-to-date with happenings at the Society.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS: We wish our members and friends a happy summer holiday. We do not anticipate issuing another Newsletter until September. Any news will be posted on the website so check it regularly.
